  • About the Lecture:

Archaeology in urban environments is more than excavation practices, objects from the past hidden in the soil, and the uncovering of deep urban histories; it is also a way of thinking and reflecting about the past, thus contributing in the creation of concepts that can stimulate discussions on how to use the past in developing urban environments in present cities.
In this presentation, lecturer will define various ways where concepts about temporality and the long-term duration of time, which is evident in urban archaeological layers and a fragmented past, can be defined as heritage values. It is argued that a concept of "deep cities" that includes ways of thinking about archaeology as a metaphoric concept will be a valuable resource in urban planning and urban development projects, as it combines the need for change, the need for new cultural imprints in the city, and the deep historic continuity of the city.
